Healthcare Science Week 11-15th March 2024

This week we’re celebrating Healthcare Science Week, which is dedicated to raising awareness of healthcare science and celebrating the variety of professions available.

The Royal Devon is home to a fantastic team of healthcare scientists from a wide range of different specialties. From cardiology to genetics, diabetes to paediatrics, healthcare science has a diverse workforce and variety of professions which brings together over 50 scientific specialisms and professional groups.

To help celebrate Sam Higginson, Chief Executive Officer visited healthcare science colleagues on Tuesday 12 March. He said: “It was fantastic to spend some time with the medical physics team this morning who were taking their turn on the healthcare science week stall at RDE as part of healthcare science week.

“Healthcare scientists are one of our groups of unsung heroes and play a vital role across the trust, so the opportunity to showcase some of their work and celebrate their successes is really timely”

Healthcare science is key to the evolution of the NHS through time, from past to the present and looking to the future. It supports new discoveries by using scientific methods to tackle our most pressing health issues, and developing innovative technologies aimed at promoting longer, healthier, and happier lives for everyone.

Two of our healthcare science colleagues have shared their thoughts on Healthcare Science Week below.

Ceri Roberts (Trainee Cardiac Physiologist – STP student): “We wanted to celebrate all of the staff working in healthcare science roles across the trust and raise awareness of all of the careers available. Healthcare scientists have various roles across the trust and are often very much in the background, but their work plays a crucial role at every stage of the patient journey; from diagnosis to treatment and monitoring. This week is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate that”.

Molly McDowell-Sweet (Specialist Biomedical Scientist):  “In certain areas of healthcare science Royal Devon teams are leading the way. In Cytology we offer one of the few biomedical scientist led Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) clinic services in the country. Leading to rapid cancer diagnosis and some onsite prognostic biomarker testing for patients.
