Summary

Nucleic acid amplification assay for the detection of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA extracted from neonatal urine samples.

Usage

Diagnosis of congenital CMV infection in new-borns.

Background

CMV is a double stranded DNA virus of the Herpesvirus family. Congenital CMV infection is the leading infectious disease cause of hearing loss in babies.

How To Request On EPIC

For electronic requesting using EPIC (RDUH ONLY – Neonatalogists / audiometry ONLY ):

Search for: ‘CMV (Cytomegalovirus) PCR (REF)‘ or test code ‘LAB913

Special Instructions

Two independent urines taken as soon as possible after birth but no later than 3 weeks of life should be taken to investigate congenital infection.
