Urine pH

Specimen

Urine container or plain universal  – must be tested in the laboratory within 2 hours of sample collection

Reference range

4.5 – 8.0

Test Usage

The kidneys play a major role in regulating acid-base balance of the body. The kidneys, pulmonary system and blood buffers are all involved in maintaining homeostasis at a pH compatible with life.

A pH value greater than 8.0 or less than 4.5 are physiologically impossible, so should be further investigated if obtained.

Urine pH provides valuable information for assessing and managing disease.
